Intellectual capital
A management term describing an organisation's or individual's intellectual assets including data, information, and knowledge. Intellectual property categories are ones for which lawyers have developed definitions and relatively clear management mechanisms over the decades or centuries. In contrast, intellectual capital relates largely to the relatively recent and rapidly growing fields relating to business processes, culture, structure, systems, standards, philosophy and approach, and information resources (including in databases, libraries, procedure manuals as well as in the know-how of personnel) - all fields which have been of concern to management consultants in recent decades. It does not have to be intellectual property to provide the benefits of intellectual capital.
